Hand

hand_schmerz_apNo two hands are alike, not even our left hand and our right.

Children learn about the world around them by using their hands to "grasp" things. All of us come into contact with our environment via our hands - we grasp, pick up, touch and feel. Our brains and our hands have a very close relationship.

Many of the disorders that can affect the hand are so different in nature that they require special consideration in the context of a specialist medical field.

Trigger Finger

Trigger fingers are a sinew disorder of the hand, causing a thickening of the tendon sheaths and the flexor musculature of the fingers. In most cases the disorder is located above the basic finger joint on the inside of the hand. The flexor musculature cannot slide smoothly in the tendon sheath anymore but is hindered by its swelling. A limited ability straighten as well as a distinct tendon thickening are typical symptoms. The disease was named after the "triggering" movement of the fingers when stretched.

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupytren2.jpgThis disease named after the surgeon Baron Dupytren leads to a flexor contraction and subsequently to a stretching inhibition of the fingers. Particularly the fourth and fifth finger cannot be stretched and remain in a bent position. Generally the disease may occur in the area of the hollow hand and the middle finger or affect, in very few cases the thumb and index finger.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Especially women in the mid-thirties may suffer from constrictions in the palm. The so-called carpal tunnel syndrome causes pains in the area of index finger, middle finger and thumb by constricting the nervus medianus. Symptoms of paralysis in the hand may occur and the gripping strength lessens. During the day the hand goes numb while a "fuzzy sensation" disrupts the sleep during the night.
